Storyhound is a small independent theatre company based in Greensboro, NC, with a focus on new work. Our creative philosophy is built on asking questions, following intuition, and uncovering new forms of collaboration. In the process, our hope is that community, performance, and discoveries emerge. Many of the "basic truths" we’ve been taught we’ve found to be ripe for engaging, dismantling, and disrupting.
Questions we're asking: What would happen if we broke the theatrical development model? What does it mean for a play to be done right? And who decides? Are there core elements in a singular theatrical moment? Can we make theatre no one gave us permission to make? Can we share theatre with audiences no one gave permission to see? Can we learn as we do?
With these questions in hand, over the past two years Storyhound has nurtured dozens of new plays by local writers, through short play festivals (Play Dead! and Insomni-Acts: Love Bites), our "Uncommon Core" reading series (The Math Plays and The Physics Plays), and through developmental workshops ("Cooking With Gas" at the 2018 Greensboro Fringe, "Dear Math" at Scuppernong Books). Our first project, The Greensboro Grapevine, was a three-part, large-scale artistic game of telephone that celebrated the art of miscommunication, and connected more than 50 local artists, playwrights, actors, musicians, poets, and filmmakers through collaboration and performance.
Storyhound is a company that moves. We are in residence through May 2018 at The Drama Center at City Arts, to create four new plays for babies and toddlers ("Play Dates: Theatre for the Very Young"). And we've found a home at Greensboro Project Space, where we've teamed up with UNCG for The Body Project, a three-month experiment to bring together more than three dozen Greensboro artists working in six forms, to unmake the body and investigate what it is to be human. The Body Project will culminate in a showing Friday, March 2 at GPS.
Storyhound offers periodic playwriting and long-form improv workshops, and hosts "Come Write In," a set hour and a half each Saturday afternoon at Scuppernong Books just for writing and checking in with personal goals.
Storyhound is led by artistic director Gabrielle Sinclair and managing director Jini Zlatniski. Learn more about Storyhound's upcoming projects and get in touch through our Facebook page, and also consider subscribing to our newsletter.
